PROJECT OVERVIEW

The course overview

Knowing what you want is great. But it is not enough to be a successful entrepreneur.

This course is built upon the fundamental premise that a successful entrepreneur is able to work with and leverage the talents and resources of others in their network. Together, we will explore how to hone our communication skills to liaise with others and improve our understanding of another persons’ true need.

We shall look into conflict and its’ role in a start-up, whilst also exploring how to influence others and building our repertoire of essential negotiation skills so that we can know how to best engage in practical scenarios that every start-up will experience, like:

  • How much should we pay our first employees?
  • What should we consider when negotiating our first sale with a large client?
  • What happens if/when investors get interested in your business?

Class 1: Innovation in business

This session aims at introducing the concept of Innovation to students. It offers some insights into how Innovation starts and develops. Concepts of ‘Evolutional Innovation’ and ‘Disruptive Innovation’ will be explored.

 

Class 2: Effective facilitator of innovation

As a follow up on Innovation, this session focusses on exploring Innovation in practice. Its content covers how to promote and raise public awareness of Innovation and how to reduce barriers to Innovation in action. Delivery of this session intends to engage students with in-session activities.

Class 3: Effective cross-cultural leadership

This session starts the exploration of leadership characteristics and styles, then moves to review the value of leadership in contemporary business context — a cross-culture business environment. Students will have opportunities to evaluate which leadership style is the best to lead a global firm.

Class 4: Communication management for results

This session introduces ways of managing communication in order to deliver good results. Content will focus on cross-culture context and show students importance of culture differences in business communication and how to carry out good communication in different business situations (e.g. negotiation, client relations and MNC internal communication.

Class 5: Become a global entrepreneur

This is the first session on Entrepreneurship. This session will focus on entrepreneur and explore with students some desired entrepreneurial behaviour and characteristics.

Class 6: Create your blue ocean

Focussing on how to create and develop a new market for your product, this session will look at ways of identifying, creating and developing a market for your product. It will also introduce the value of understanding target consumer behaviour.

Class 7: The China start-up

This session is the first part of ‘The China Start-up’. It will begin the teaching with an in-session activity. Students will be asked to turn an entrepreneurial idea into reality including registering a company in China. The second half of the session will introduce relevant procedures and legislatives of business registration in China

Class 8: Sustaining success

Statistics show that many student Start-up business could not sustain after its launch. To avoid a business to be ‘short-lived’, this session will explore barriers to sustaining a business and how to mitigate negative impact of these barriers. Content will be based on real life entrepreneur stories.

Class 9: The start-up clinic

This optional session is designed to offer consultation to students who plan to start up their business or already started their business planning.
