Why did 17 millennial Master students travel to Suzhou, China, to take a series of workshops on communications in the digital world? Is travel for training so necessary in a digital world?
Delivered in 5 half-day workshops, Outlander Consulting developed a broad series of workshops to tackle the key communication challenges meeting todays’ businesses.
Globalisation prerequisites a digital communication strategy. Without integrating emerging technologies (from WeChat to Slack), businesses run the risk of losing vital opportunities. But what does this mean for traditional communication skills?
Noting Jodi Glickman’s emphasis towards offline communication skills for optimised communication, the workshops directed students to explore the core themes of:
- Defining the digital world
- What makes a good communication strategy
- Offline communication
- Recognise different styles of communication
- Assignment: develop a WeChat strategy for ‘X’ scenario
Learning from a range of failures (such as China’s Milk Scandel) and successes (such as Johnson and Johnsons handling of the Tylenol murders), as well as discussing the rise of China’s 44% domination of India’s Top 100 app market in 2018, participants engaged in a range of discussions and case examples.
The workshops culminated in students applying learning in both an online/offline context by proposing a WeChat communications strategy for a fictional company (which they needed to create).
